Sophomore year PSAT—is 1020 a decent score?

Just received my PSAT score and I'm sitting on a 1020. For a sophomore, is this an okay start? I'm thinking ahead to college admissions and wondering how much I need to up my game. Tips and feedback from upperclassmen would be amazing right now!

Hey there! First off, a 1020 as a sophomore is absolutely a decent start. Remember, the PSAT is a practice test and a great diagnostic tool to identify areas where you can improve. For some context, the national average for sophomores is usually around the 920s, so you're already above that, which is great!

When it comes to upping your game for the actual SAT, you've got time on your side. Many students see a significant score increase from their sophomore to junior year PSAT, and then again on their SAT. What helps many students is starting a regular study schedule, focusing on a mix of practice questions, and reviewing key concepts that are challenging. Something as simple as 20-30 minutes a day can make a big difference over time.

Be sure to utilize practice tests available from the College Board and consider resources like Khan Academy and CollegeVine, which offer free practice programs. Check out CollegeVine's PSAT articles here: https://blog.collegevine.com/category/standardized-tests/psat/

Keep that positive momentum going, and you're bound to see improvements. Stay committed, and good luck!
