Are freshmen required to take the PSAT?

My school is pushing for underclassmen to take the PSAT and I'm just a freshman. Is this mandatory or just a 'strongly recommended' kind of thing? I want to focus on my grades but not sure if I can skip this test.

Hi there! As a freshman, taking the PSAT can be a great way to familiarize yourself with the SAT-style questions and the exam format. Think of it as a low-stakes practice run that can help reduce test anxiety in the future. Plus, when you take it in your junior year, your scores can qualify you for National Merit Scholarships, so practicing early can give you a leg up.

That being said, if you feel that it would significantly detract from your focus on your grades, it's generally okay to opt out, especially as a freshman. You'll even have the opportunity to do another trial run sophomore year. Just keep in mind that if you do decide to take it, there could be benefits without any real downside – no colleges will see your scores, and you'll get a sense of where you stand with standardized testing. Even if you don't study at all, the experience of sitting for a timed test and working through multiple-choice questions can be beneficial. But ultimately, it's totally your call!
