Military EMT opportunities?

So, I'm thinking about becoming an EMT but also really interested in joining the military. Which branch would give me the best opportunities as an EMT?

The Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard all offer careers that are somewhat similar to EMT work, but the military role closest to the one of a civilian EMT is a Combat Medic in the Army, also known as a Health Care Specialist (MOS 68W). They're trained to provide first aid and trauma care in the field, much like EMTs do in a civilian setting.

The Navy has the Hospital Corpsman (HM) and the Air Force has Aerospace Medical Service professionals which involves similar duties.

While the Coast Guard does not have a direct equivalent to a combat medic, they do have Health Services Technicians (HS) who provide healthcare services to the Coast Guard personnel.

Each of these roles provides varying levels of emergency medical training, with all of them requiring EMT-Basic certification at minimum. You'll gain real-world experience, and the military will generally fund your training and education in these roles.

Bear in mind, your experience will have a different flavor depending on the branch and specific role; you could be supporting a unit on the field, working in a military hospital, or providing care on a naval ship.

Post-military, this experience should serve you well in a civilian EMT or paramedic role. However, some state requirements for paramedics may be more strict than military training, so you may need additional education or certification to go beyond an EMT-basic role in a civilian setting. Do ensure you are eligible for the branches you're interested in, meet all the requirements including physical fitness, and are willing to commit to a number of years in the service. Good luck with your decision process!
