Space Exploration - Does the US Military Have a Space Branch?

Hi all, for as long as I can remember, I've always been fascinated with space and wanted to join the space force, but I'm not so sure about where to start. Does the US military have a branch dedicated to space? If so, how does one join and what are the requirements?

Yes, the United States does have a military branch dedicated to space exploration known as the United States Space Force (USSF). The USSF was established in December 2019, making it the newest branch of the U.S. military and the first new military service since the establishment of the U.S. Air Force in 1947.

The Space Force's primary role is to "organize, train, and equip" personnel to protect U.S. and allied interests in space. Space Force personnel monitor and track ballistic missile launches, maintain satellites for communication purposes, and keep a keen eye out for space debris which can pose threats for anything that orbits our planet.

As for the process of joining the USSF, currently, the most common path is through the U.S. Air Force since the Space Force is part of the Department of the Air Force much like the Marines operate as part of the Department of the Navy. Individuals wishing to join would follow a similar application and selection process as any other military branch.

To join, you need to be a U.S. citizen and meet physical, moral, and academic criteria:

- Age: Must be between 17 to 39 years old.

- Education: As with the other branches, a high school diploma and successful completion of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is required, some positions may require additional schooling or degree.

- Physical Health: You must meet specific height, weight, and overall health requirements and you'll undergo a full physical examination.

- Moral Health: Clean criminal and financial records are necessary as they look at past behaviors as a predictor for future behaviors.

Currently, the opportunities within the USSF are somewhat limited and highly competitive due to the niche nature of this new organization within the military and its specific focus on space operations. It's important to understand that the roles within the Space Force are still being defined and expanded upon, so if it's a path you're seriously considering, service in the Air Force might be a good starting point.
