What military branch does the Surgeon General serve in?

So, I'm looking into the more medical side of the military and I'm sorta curious. Does the Surgeon General serve in a specific branch of the military? It's been a bit of a struggle trying to find this information online.

The Surgeon General of the United States, while having a title that includes "General," is not actually part of the military. Instead, they are the leading spokesperson on matters of public health in the country and are a civilian member of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. This group is one of the eight uniformed services of the United States, but it's a non-military organization.

The U.S. Public Health Service, headed by the Surgeon General, is responsible for promoting public health, especially in preventing and controlling diseases, and improving the nation's health system. The Surgeon General's position specifically does not involve military operations or military healthcare, unlike the Surgeons General of the Army, Navy, or Air Force, who are military positions within their respective branches.

It's great that you're interested in the medical side of the military; there are definitely many opportunities for roles in healthcare across all military branches. If you were looking specifically at the position of Surgeon General as a potential career path with military service, however, I did want to clarify that misunderstanding. It sounds like a career as a healthcare provider in the military could be a great path to consider!
