Military Acceptance of GED

So I didn't finish high school traditionally, but I've got my GED. Do all branches of the military accept that or is it only specific ones?

Each branch of the military has its own set of requirements when it comes to GED holders. That said, generally, all branches of the U.S. Military do accept the GED as a valid high school equivalent, each with their own stipulations and levels of acceptance.

The Army, for instance, groups applicants into different tiers based on their educational credentials, with traditional high school graduates in Tier 1, and GED holders in Tier 2. While they do accept GED holders, they restrict the number of slots for Tier 2 applicants, so it might be a little more competitive to get in.

The Navy and Air Force also accept GED holders, but they consistently have smaller quotas for these applicants compared to traditional high school graduates, similar to the Army. It's worth noting that the Air Force is often the most restrictive, typically accepting a lower percentage of GED holders relative to other branches.

The Coast Guard places heavy emphasis on further education or guaranteed job training for GED applicants, often encouraging them to earn 15 college credits to improve their standing or even to qualify. The Marines, on the other hand, typically require a waiver for GED holders, as they prefer high school graduates.

Lastly, the Space Force, the newest branch of the military, is more specialized and technically geared, likely expecting higher educational standards, but their specific policy regarding GED holders isn't clearly outlined yet.

Regardless of the branch, if you score high on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), it can increase your chances of being accepted with a GED. I would recommend that you contact a local recruiter from the branch you're interested in to learn about the most current policies regarding GED acceptance.
