Can I Join a Military Branch without a GED?

Hey, guys, I didn't finish high school but I've been thinking about the military as a viable path. Is there any branch of the military that would take me in without a GED?

Yes, joining the U.S. military without a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) is possible. However, know that it can be more challenging. The military heavily emphasizes the importance of education and the majority of new enlistees for all branches have a high school diploma or higher.

The Armed Forces, including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and the Coast Guard, all have policies that favor recruits with a high school diploma. These branches generally require either a high school diploma or a GED certification. Exceptions to this rule are typically granted on a case-by-case basis with a limited number accepted each year.

In lieu of a GED, you might consider the Army National Guard's GED Plus Program. Essentially, this program allows you to join the Army National Guard, complete your basic training, and then get your GED before attending advanced individual training (AIT).

The Space Force, the latest branch, might have different requirements but as it's only been around since 2019 the specifics are still evolving.

Before you make any decisions, I highly recommend connecting with a recruiter who can give you the most up-to-date information and help navigate the process. They'll be able to provide more specific advice and answer any further questions you might have regarding joining the military without a GED.

Don't let your lack of a GED or diploma discourage you. There are opportunities for everyone in the military and this could be a great chance for you to receive training, serve your country, and potentially gain skills for future employment.
