G.E.D. Holder Looking to Serve - Which Military Branch?

Hey folks, I have my GED and I'm considering going into the military. Which branches might be open to me joining?

Firstly, I commend your decision to serve your country through military service. Having a General Education Development (GED) certificate can serve as your ticket to various branches of the military, although different branches have different requirements with regards to education.

The U.S. Army is known to be relatively lenient, accepting more GED holders than any other branch. However, do note that because GED holders often drop out of the military at a higher rate, they are classified as "Tier 2" candidates, and there is a limit to how many can be recruited each year.

The U.S. Navy occasionally makes exceptions for GED holders, especially if they have earned some college credits post-GED.

The U.S. Air Force usually requires a high school diploma, but sometimes accepts GED holders.

The U.S. Marine Corps generally requires a high school diploma and usually only makes exceptions for GED holders with waivers, which can be difficult to get.

Finally, the U.S. Coast Guard rarely accepts GED holders, giving preference to those with high school diplomas or higher education.

The newly formed U.S. Space Force, being essentially a part of the Air Force at this point, would likely carry the same high standards as the Air Force, although specific information may be less established given the recent establishment of this branch.

In conclusion, while your situation might be more challenging than that of a high school diploma holder, it isn't impossible to join the military with GED. I encourage you reach out to recruiters from different branches to get the most accurate and updated information. Good luck on your journey!
