Acceptance of the GED by Military Branches

Hey everyone, how's it going? I've been exploring different paths after graduation and one of them is about serving in the military. I'm on the path to get my GED instead of a traditional high school diploma, and I am curious - which military branches would accept my GED?

Hello! I'm glad to hear you're considering serving in the military as one of your post-graduation paths. It's important to know that all branches of the U.S. military do accept the GED. They are the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, and their associated reserve and guard units. However, it's worth noting that the military generally gives preferential treatment to applicants with high school diplomas over those with GEDs due to the competitive nature of military enlistment.

Each military branch has its own standards when it comes to accepting recruits with a GED. For example, the Army allows for a certain percentage of GED holders to enlist each year, while the Air Force typically requires GED holders to score higher on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) compared to those with a high school diploma. Similarly, the Navy and Marines may have more limited opportunities for GED holders, although waivers can sometimes be granted depending on the particular circumstances.

So, while getting a GED does not automatically disqualify you from military service, it may present some additional challenges or requirements in the enlistment process. One useful pathway to consider could be the National Guard GED Plus program, which allows candidates to enlist and complete basic training, after which they assist you in obtaining your GED prior to your Advanced Individual Training(AIT).

Remember to get in touch with a local recruiter for the most accurate and updated information as these policies can and do change over time. Good luck with your future plans!
