Military service for aspiring cooks?

So, here's the deal: I like cooking more than anything. I've been considering enlisting to escape conventional college. I'm just not sure which military branch to choose. Anyone know which one might be a good fit for an aspiring cook?

The army could be an excellent choice for you. The U.S. Army provides a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) focused on culinary service. The MOS 92G, Culinary Specialist, is highly focused on all aspects of food service operations. It includes the preparation and cooking of all types of food, the baking of bread, rolls, cakes, and pastries, and menu planning.

Something to keep in mind is the Army also provides schooling opportunities to its enlisted personnel. If you find you enjoy your culinary service and want to go more in-depth, you could use educational assistance programs like the GI Bill to pursue further formal culinary training.

Another good option is the Navy. The Navy has Culinary Specialists who provide food service catering for officers and special guests, plan menus, order supplies, and maintain accounting systems. They also observe and enforce safety and sanitation regulations.

Similarly, the Coast Guard provides a culinary specialist rating, in which individuals receive training in sanitation, nutrition, and other areas of food service and preparation, along with baking and cooks skills.

One thing to remember, cooking in the military is not like cooking at a restaurant. It's hard work, you'll be cooking for many people, and you might not get the chance at high-end cuisine. However, the experience can give you a solid foundation in large-volume food preparation and cooking.

Finally, your specific preferences, future career goals, and hopes for culinary training would hugely shape your decision. I encourage you to talk with recruiters for more insight and details on what each branch could offer you specifically. Each branch has unique benefits and its own culture, so you'll want to choose a path that aligns closely with your personal and professional interests.
