Looking for diversity in the military. Which branch should I consider?

I’m passionate about cultural and racial diversity. So, before joining the military, I'd like to know which branch is considered the most diverse?

In terms of racial and ethnic diversity, the U.S. Army has generally been recognized as the most diverse branch of the military. According to the Defense Manpower Data Center, as of 2020 approximately 55% of the active duty Army identified as non-Caucasian, a higher percentage than in any other branch of the military.

That being said, diversity comes in many forms, not just race and ethnicity. In terms of gender diversity, the Air Force has the highest percentage of women, currently around 21%.

However, it's important to remember that diversity varies considerably depending on the specific job or unit within each branch. It would be worthwhile to research the specific careers or units you're interested in, and perhaps reach out to current and former servicemembers, to get a more detailed picture.

Regardless of the branch, all divisions of the military are committed to promoting inclusion and diversity. The Department of Defense has various programs, like the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, which works to prevent discrimination and foster inclusivity. Each branch also has its own initiatives, like the Army's "People Strategy," which emphasizes the importance of diversity.

Your passion for diversity is commendable, and the military can offer unique opportunities to work with and learn from people from a variety of backgrounds. It's a path that's not only about serving your country but can also foster personal growth and broadened perspectives. Good luck with your decision!
