Who's on First? (Regarding US Military Branches)

Came across this question during my research – which U.S. military branch actually came first? I thought it might be interesting to know for a project I'm working on. Thanks in advance for the help!

The first branch of the U.S. military that was formed was the Continental Army, which eventually became the United States Army. It was established on June 14, 1775, by the Second Continental Congress, during the Revolutionary War. This came before the formation of the United States as a country itself, which happened in 1776.

The other branches of the U.S. military were established in this order:

1. United States Navy: It was initially formed as the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775, and became the U.S. Navy after the country was formed.

2. United States Marine Corps: It was established on November 10, 1775.

3. United States Coast Guard: Originally established as the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790, it became the Coast Guard in 1915.

4. United States Air Force: This branch was originally part of the Army and called the Army Air Forces. It became a separate branch on September 18, 1947.

5. United States Space Force: The newest branch of the U.S. military was established on December 20, 2019.

I hope this helps with your project!
