What's the purpose of the PSAT and how can it benefit me?

Hey everyone, I'm starting to think about college prep and I've heard a lot about the PSAT. Can anyone tell me what the PSAT actually does for students? Like, does it help with college admissions or is it just practice for the SAT? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Hello there! I'm glad to see you're being proactive about your college prep. The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, primarily serves two purposes.

First, it's a great way to practice for the actual SAT, as it follows a similar format and covers similar content areas, which will help you become familiar with the type of questions you'll encounter.

Second, and quite significantly, your PSAT score can qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program if you score within the top 1% of test-takers in your state. This can lead to scholarship opportunities and can be a standout achievement on your college applications.

So, while the PSAT score itself isn't used in college admissions, its benefits, like the practice experience and potential scholarships, are certainly advantageous. Take the test seriously and good luck!
