Is there a fee to take the PSAT or is it free?

Money is a bit tight and I'm trying to plan out my expenses for the year. Does taking the PSAT cost anything, or is it provided by schools for free?

Hello there! I understand your concerns about planning for expenses—and I think it's great that you're thinking ahead. As someone who's been through the process, I can share that there is usually a fee for taking the PSAT, but it’s not too exorbitant. The cost can vary from school to school, but it typically hovers around $17 to $20. Some schools may cover the fee for their students or offer fee waivers for those who qualify due to financial hardship, so it's definitely worth talking to your school counselor to find out what the case is at your school. When my child took the PSAT, we had to pay a small fee, but I found it to be a worthy investment considering the benefits the PSAT can offer, such as qualification for the National Merit Scholarship. Just remember to check in with your school’s guidance office for the most accurate information. Best of luck with your preparations!
