Military Salute Traditions

I've seen different military personnel in movies and noticed that they all seem to salute slightly differently. Can someone explain the differences in salutes in all 4 military branches? Just a civilian trying to understand the nuances of military traditions.

While the motivation behind the military salute is universal as a sign of respect, but the details can vary among the different branches. Here's a brief rundown:

Army and Air Force: The salute in both of these branches is similar. Personnel raise their hand quickly, with the upper arm horizontal to the ground. The tip of their index finger touches the corner of their right eyebrow or the glasses if they're wearing them. All fingers and the thumb are extended and joined, with the palm tilted slightly downward.

Navy and Coast Guard: The salute is largely the same as for the Army and Air Force, but the palm is generally more level with the ground or slightly inclined.

Marine Corps: Salute similar to Army and Air Force, but the strictest enforcement of a crisp, clean motion. Marines are known for their focus on precision and discipline, and that comes through in their salute.

Remember that these are just typical behaviors. Individual service members may adjust their salute as long as the essential sign of respect is rendered.

Additional note, the U.S. Space Force, the newest branch of the military has yet to officially publicize if their salute differs from other branches or maintains similarities.

It's interesting to delve into the unique traditions and customs within different branches of the military, so thanks for asking!
