How does the PSAT scoring work compared to the SAT?

Hey guys, just took the PSAT and I'm curious – how is the PSAT scored compared to the SAT? I've heard the scales are different, but I'm not exactly sure how. Does the PSAT scoring give a good indication of what I could potentially score on the SAT, or is it totally different?

Hello there! Great question about the PSAT and SAT scoring systems. The PSAT is scored on a scale from 320 to 1520, while the SAT scores range from 400 to 1600. Both exams have two main sections: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. Each section of the PSAT is scored between 160 and 760, which is then combined for your total score, whereas for the SAT, each section is scored between 200 and 800.

The PSAT scoring can indeed give you a ballpark idea of your potential SAT score – you could think of your PSAT score as a predictor of your SAT score, if you took the SAT without further study or practice. However, since the SAT is slightly more difficult and has a broader scoring range, if you're looking to improve your SAT score based on your PSAT performance, consider focusing on areas where you didn't do as well and seek out targeted practice in those topics. Hope that helps, and good luck with your future testing!
