Could anyone breakdown the average pay across different U.S. military branches?

Hey there, high school junior here. I'm exploring my options for after I graduate and the military is on my radar. I was wondering if anyone could break down the average pay for different branches of the U.S. military?

Pay in the U.S. military is largely consistent across all branches, including the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force. The primary factors that determine pay are your rank and years of service, not the specific branch you serve in.

Typically, military service starts with an enlisted rank where you can earn a base pay ranging from around $20,000 to $40,000 annually in your first few years. This increases with rank and years of experience, topping out at around $90,000 annually for the most senior enlisted members.

If you move through Officer Candidate School to become an Officer, the base pay starts out higher, typically around $40,000 a year, depending on the branch. Further, senior officers (with several years of service) might earn a base pay ranging from $90,000 to over $150,000 annually.

Remember, this is just base pay and doesn't take into account housing and subsistence allowances, or special pays for skills that are in high demand, or those skills that require additional responsibilities or risk. Moreover, a huge benefit of joining the military is the comprehensive package - including free healthcare, housing allowances, meals, clothing, tax benefits, retirement plans, and educational opportunities. When these are factored in, the compensation can be much higher than the base pay.

In short, your decision on which branch to join might be better guided by where you feel your interests, skills, and long-term career goals are best aligned, as the pay is relatively uniform across branches.
