What's the average salary per military branch?

Hey there! I'm currently a junior and starting to weigh different career options. One of them is joining the military but I have no idea about the earnings in various military branches. While I understand the service is about much more than salary, I still want to be aware of what I can expect financially. Can anyone share what’s the average salary like in different military branches? Thank you!

When discussing military pay, it's important to consider that each service member's salary can vary quite a bit depending on their rank, years of service, and special qualifications (like flight or hazard pay). However, with that said, basic pay for an entry-level (E-1) enlisted member with less than two years of service is the same across all branches: $2,017.20 per month as of 2024. This gross income doesn't include the various allowances (like housing, cost-of-living, and sustenance) and other benefits that service members receive.

Once you move beyond the entry-level, pay starts to differ based not only on rank and years of service, but also on the different skills or special duties that service members perform. For instance, a more senior enlisted person with a pay-grade of E-6, who has more than a decade of service, will earn $4,387.80 monthly. Higher-ranking officers have even greater disparities in income.

All branches of the military also offer opportunities to earn additional pay for certain job roles, skills, or duties. For instance, personnel who perform flight duties, work with hazardous materials, or are in a combat zone can receive bonus pay that can greatly influence their overall salary.

Finally, remember that military service also comes with substantial benefits beyond the base pay, including health care, retirement plans, tuition assistance, and other allowances. Being aware of the full range of benefits can give you a better sense of the total value of compensation in the military.

If you want a more specific estimate of military pay, I'd suggest using an online military pay calculator. These calculators allow you to enter variables like your planned military branch, rank, and years of service to get a more accurate projection of potential military pay.

In sum, while base pay varies, there isn't a significant difference in salary between the branches at the same rank and years of service. Considering your interests, skills, and career goals may be more beneficial in determining which branch to join.
