How long do most people serve in the military by branch?

Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well. As part of my future planning, I've been considering the military as an option after high school. However, I'm a bit unclear about how long people usually serve in different military branches. Is there an average time people typically serve in, say, the Army vs. the Air Force? Your insights would be greatly appreciated.

The service commitment largely depends on the role and the branch of the military you're interested in. In the U.S., enlistment periods typically range from two to six years, but the four-year enlistment is the most common. Here's a brief rundown for each branch:

Army: Most Army enlistment contracts are for four years of active duty, followed by four years in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). In the IRR, you don't train, and you can live anywhere you want, but you may be called to serve if needed.

Navy: Enlistments in the Navy run from four to six years, but with some positions requiring an extended active-duty obligation due to the length of training.

Air Force: The minimum enlistment term in the Air Force is four years, but some jobs may require a six-year commitment.

Marines: Enlistments in the Marines usually run for four years. Some special roles may require a longer commitment.

Coast Guard: Coast Guard enlistments are typically for four to six years with the regular active duty.

Space Force: This is a relatively new branch. However, it falls under the Department of the Air Force so the enlistment terms are assumed to be the same as the Air Force.

In all the branches, officers typically have a minimum service term of three to five years, but it can be longer depending on their training and commissioning route.

These are standard ranges, but it's important to remember that actual length of service can also greatly depend on specific roles, ongoing education, and other personal factors. You should thoroughly research each branch and discuss it with a recruiter to choose the best path for you.
