Physician Assistants and Military Service

Hi! I want to be a Physician Assistant and I'm considering joining the military to help reach that goal. I'm curious though, what's the best branch of the military for someone looking to become a PA?

There are potential opportunities for Physician Assistants in all branches of the military. However, the best branch for you may depend on factors such as your career goals and personal preferences. Here's a brief overview of the different branches and what they offer:

The Army provides the Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP) which is a full-time PA program. It awards a master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies which allows graduates to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination requisite for any PA in the U.S.

The Navy also collaborates with the IPAP, offering its officers and enlisted members an opportunity to earn their PA degrees.

The Air Force also participates in the IPAP. Air Force PAs have a more autonomous practice than in other branches, often serving as the sole provider at remote locations, both domestically and overseas.

Lastly, the newest branch, Space Force, currently reassigns its healthcare providers from the Air Force. As such, PAs in Space Force would likely have similar job responsibilities and training opportunities as those in the Air Force.

Each branch of the military has its unique missions and culture, and this can also influence your decision. Participating in an ROTC program or talking to a current or former military PA can provide valuable insights. Also remember to consider commitment length, locations of bases, active vs. reserve commitment, and educational benefits.

Remember, no matter which branch you choose, serving as a PA in the military can be an exceptional experience, providing opportunities for leadership, travel, and practicing medicine in unique settings.

It's probably wise to get in touch with recruiters from different branches to discuss your goals as a Physician Assistant and see what specific opportunities might be available to you.
