Foreign Languages in College – What's Easiest to Start?

Hi everyone! So finally decided to learn a new language at college. Want to explore cultures and learn a useful skill. However, I still want to avoid excessive stress. So, what is usually considered the 'easiest' foreign language to start learning in college?

Each person's language-learning journey can be quite different, based on their interests, prior exposure to languages, linguistic background, and personal aptitude. Below are some languages generally considered easier for English speakers:

1. Spanish: With many English cognates and a fairly straightforward grammar system, Spanish is often cited as a great starting point for college students. The pronunciation is also clear and consistent, making it easier to pick up. Furthermore, it's a widely spoken language, so there will be a lot of opportunities to practice.

2. French: French shares a significant amount of vocabulary with English due to shared Latin roots. This might shorten your initial learning curve. Also, French is commonly taught and spoken worldwide, providing ample opportunities to practice and utilize the language.

3. Italian: Thought of as another easy-to-grasp language for English speakers. Italian has a consistent pronunciation system, and the fact that it uses the same alphabet as English is certainly a plus.

Remember that the 'easiest' language can vary depending on individual factors. For instance, if you have previously studied Latin, you might find it easier to pick up other Romance languages such as Spanish, French, or Italian. Likewise, Mandarin might be easier for those with a background in other East Asian languages.

Choose a language that aligns not just with your comfort but also your personal interest and any future career aspirations you might have. Having a strong interest in the language can help greatly with the motivation during your language learning journey.
