Are PSATs actually significant for college admissions?

I’ve heard mixed things about the PSAT... Does it really matter for college apps? Do colleges see your scores? Any advice on how to approach the PSAT would be awesome!

The straightforward answer: no, the PSATs aren't considered directly in college admissions decisions. College admissions committees don't see your PSAT scores unless you choose to report them, which is not typical. The primary significance of the PSAT is that it qualifies you for the National Merit Scholarship Program when you're a junior. Only scores from the junior year PSAT can qualify you for this competition, and high scorers may be recognized as Commended Students, Semifinalists, and potentially National Merit Scholars, which can lead to scholarships.

So, should you take it seriously? Yes, especially in your junior year, because of the potential scholarship opportunities. Also, the PSAT serves as a good practice for the SAT, providing you with feedback on your strengths and weaknesses. As for your approach, treat it like a practice SAT: study and prepare to perform your best, particularly if you're aiming for National Merit recognition.
