Preparing to Join a Branch of the Military?

Hey folks, I'm a junior and have been giving serious thought to joining the military after high school. Are there things I should be doing now to prepare myself to enlist in one of the 6 branches? Like, should be I focusing on certain subjects in school or picking up specific skills?

That's quite admirable, and I'm sure you've thought about this decision thoroughly. It's important to understand that the military is not just about physical prowess but also about discipline, mental resilience, and specific skills or knowledge related to various roles.

1. Physical Fitness: Start a fitness routine that includes both cardio and strength training. This is essential as physical fitness is a major consideration during the selection process.

2. Leadership Skills: Begin to focus on developing leadership skills. This could mean taking up a leadership role in a club, a sport, or another extracurricular activity. Leadership is valued in the military, so these experiences can demonstrate your prospective competence as a future leader.

3. Education: In terms of academics, English and math are both important as they form a part of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) that helps determine best-fit jobs within the military. Your scores will not only decide your eligibility but also the occupations you qualify for.

4. Research: There's no such thing as knowing too much about the branch you're interested in. Learn about the roles and responsibilities associated with different positions and paths, and the lifestyle you'd be expected to adapt to.

5. Communication Skills: Good communication skills are invaluable in the military. Public speaking courses or drama classes can help with this.

6. Checkup: Lastly, a thorough medical checkup would be worthwhile. This will give you a clear idea of your medical fitness and any adjustments or treatment you may need before enlistment.

Remember that military recruitment officers are a fantastic resource. Reach out to one in your community, they can offer additional personalized advice based on the branch you're inclined towards. Keep in mind that this is a significant life decision and it's important to discuss your plans with your family and mentors as well. Good luck!
