Diversity at North Carolina State University

Hello everyone, currently a junior who values multicultural environments. I've been looking closely at NC State lately. Can anyone share what the diversity scene like at NC State University? I'm interested in both the student body and faculty. Appreciate any insights you all have.

North Carolina State University (NC State) has been fostering an open and inclusive culture and they do have a diverse student body. According to the university, as of Fall 2023, around 23.4% of their undergraduate students identified as a racial or ethnic minority. In regards to the faculty, they are equally committed to diversity, around 17% of the faculty identified as a racial or ethnic minority.

It's also worth noting that NC State has numerous programs and initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusivity. For example, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) at NC State works toward fostering an inclusive academic and social environment. It organizes various events and programs where people from diverse backgrounds come together, and there's support for various affinity groups on campus, reflected in the breadth of student clubs and organizations catering to different cultures, ethnicities, and identities.

It's essential to remember, though, that statistical diversity doesn't necessarily reflect the cultural environment or personal experiences, which might differ greatly among individuals. Connecting with current students or alumni could provide you with more personalized insights into the multicultural environment at NC State. They could share their experiences with you based on their time spent there.

Keep in mind that a sense of belonging in a school isn't only about numbers but also about how engaged you are in the community, the extent of bias, and the efforts of the school to maintain inclusiveness. For example, does the school have non-discrimination policies? Do they have events, clubs, or courses that celebrate and learn from a wide range of cultures? Keep these questions in mind as you research more about NC State's culture and diversity.
