Should I Choose Purdue University or UCLA for Computer Science?

Hi everyone, I'm a junior who's started to narrow down my college list and it's getting tough. I'm passionate about computer science, and both Purdue and UCLA have excellent programs. Does anyone have any insights on the strengths and weaknesses of these institutions that could help inform my decision?

These are both strong, reputable programs, so you'd have a great computer science (CS) education at either. That said, there are some distinguishing features that might sway you one way or the other.

Purdue, for instance, is known for its intense practical education. You will dive deeply into the nitty-gritty of computer science concepts and put a lot of hands-on work into projects. No stone will be left unturned in your understanding of the subject. This approach will likely lead you to be a very well-rounded computer science practitioner. And in terms of community feel, Purdue has a Big Ten atmosphere with strong sports culture and spirit. You'll be in a smaller town, which provides a tighter-knit community but less access to a big city.

UCLA, on the other hand, has strengths in AI, graphics, and systems. So if you're interested in those areas, UCLA may be the way to go. The school is also noted for its interdisciplinary programs. Given the nature of CS, having the opportunity to collaborate and learn from other disciplines could be quite valuable. Beyond academics, UCLA has a strong campus culture with diverse intramural sports, cultural events, and arts festivals. Its location in Los Angeles provides access to tech and entertainment industry opportunities for internships and post-graduation jobs.

Ultimately, the choice between Purdue and UCLA for computer science should depend on your specific interests within CS, your preferred method of instruction, the type of college experience you desire, and where you could see yourself living for four years. It's not an easy choice; both schools are solid options for CS. The best advice here is to do a deeper dive into each school's curriculum and offerings, visit the campuses if possible, and try to envision yourself at each place. Consider where you would be happiest and most enriched, both academically and personally. Good luck with your decision!
