What are the actual benefits of scoring well on the PSAT?

I've heard from a few people that the PSAT can be important, but I'm not totally clear on the benefits. Can someone break down exactly what the advantages are for a high school junior like me to do really well on the PSAT?

I completely understand your curiosity regarding the PSAT—it's common among high school juniors. Doing well on the PSAT can primarily qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which is prestigious and can lead to scholarship opportunities.

Beyond that, it's a valuable practice run for the SAT. The format and timing of the questions on the PSAT mimic the SAT, giving you a taste of what to expect. This experience can ultimately increase your SAT scores, further opening the door to more scholarship opportunities and college options.

Additionally, scoring high on the PSAT can catch the attention of colleges that sometimes send information and recruiting materials to top scorers. Even though it doesn't go to colleges as an official score, it sets a solid foundation for further standardized testing, and that can't be understated. So, there's a lot to gain from putting in your best effort on the PSAT!
