Sam Houston vs University of Houston

I'm honestly torn between Sam Houston and University of Houston. Does anyone have any advice or experiences about how these two schools compare in terms of academics and campus life?

Both Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and University of Houston (UH) have rewarding educational opportunities and vibrant campus life, but they do have different attributes that may sway your decision one way or another.

As for academics, both schools offer a plethora of majors. However, if you're looking at specific programs of study, one school may edge out the other. For instance, UH is known for its strong business, engineering, and hotel and restaurant management programs. SHSU, on the other hand, gains grades for its criminal justice, education, and business programs. When making your decision, consider where your interests lie and which school has a stronger program in that area.

School size could influence your preferences. UH, as a larger institution with over 37,000 undergraduate students, might provide a more diverse course offering and a wider pool of students to interact with. It's also in the middle of the fourth largest city in the U.S., so there are a lot of opportunities for internships and jobs. SHSU, with a student population around 18,500 undergraduates, offers a more close-knit community, potentially smaller class sizes, and more personal interaction with professors.

Campus life can differ significantly between these two schools. UH, located in a bustling urban setting, offers a multitude of cultural events, nightlife, and off-campus entertainment typical of a large city. SHSU is located in Huntsville, a smaller and more rural city, which may offer a quieter, less hectic college experience. There, you can benefit from outdoor recreational activities, like hiking in Sam Houston National Forest.

Lastly, cost could be a factor. Looking at tuition alone, SHSU is a bit more pocket-friendly than UH. However, you should also consider availability of scholarships, financial aid, as well as cost of living in determining the overall cost of attending.

Ultimately, I would advise visiting each campus, if possible, to get a feel for which environment seems more fitting for you. A campus tour can often provide insights you can't glean from websites or pamphlets. Good luck with your decision!
