What colleges have more accessible basketball programs for walk-ons?

Hey all, I'm a rising junior hoops enthusiast looking to balance my academic interests with my passion for basketball in college. Where should I look if I want a good chance of making the team as a walk-on?

There are indeed many colleges where walk-on opportunities exist for basketball. To increase your chances as a walk-on, you might want to consider Division III colleges where there might be more opportunities. Some noteworthy DIII schools with strong academics and recognized athletics include Amherst College, Williams College, and University of Chicago.

Also, many schools almost always carry a few walk-ons. Some of these schools might even include smaller Division I colleges - Ivy League schools have been known to carry walk-on players as well.

Another strategy might be to look at schools where the basketball program isn't exceptionally strong, as it might be easier to make the team as a walk-on there.

Keep in mind though, while walking on is a great idea if you want to pursue your passion, it is a significant commitment. The demands of being on a college basketball team (even as a walk-on) can be intense, so be confident that you can balance the rigors of academics and athletics before you commit.

It would also be advantageous to reach out to the coach ahead of time to express your interest and understand what the walk-on process looks like at their particular school. It's vital to maintain communication before submitting your application and after getting accepted into the school if you're seriously considering this path.

You should also consider participating in intramural or club basketball teams, which exist at many schools. These offer a less rigorous schedule while still allowing you to enjoy the sport you love. Remember, enjoying the game should be your primary focus. Good luck with your college search!
