What are the easiest pets to care for while in college?

Hi all! I've been thinking about getting a pet to keep me company in college. Any recommendations for pets that are low maintenance and suitable for a college dorm or apartment?

Sure, it's definitely important to consider your living accommodations and school workload when thinking about a pet. A few pets commonly regarded as low maintenance could work well in a college setting.

1. Fish: With a nice tank and appropriate filtration, they require less hands-on time and can comfortably stay in a small area. Remember to feed them regularly and clean the tank every few weeks. They don't need interaction like dogs or cats, so it's okay if you have long hours of studying or classes.

2. Hamsters or Gerbils: These small rodents are mostly nocturnal and while they do require feeding, water, and cage cleaning, they can be left alone during the day when you're at class. They're also quite quiet, which is a plus for roommates or quiet study time.

3. Betta Fish: If you're going smaller than a standard fish tank, a Betta could be a great option. They're hardy and can live in small bowls (though larger is still better) and have a diet of pre-packaged food.

4. Reptiles (like a turtle or gecko): They require an initial setup with heating and lighting in their terrarium but afterwards, they require relatively low care. Just remember to feed them and keep the terrarium clean.

5. Hermit Crabs: They require a terrarium with damp sand and shells for when they grow, but are otherwise fairly low-maintenance. They're also very quiet and mostly nocturnal.

Check with your college for their pet policies and also consider your schedule and lifetyle. Pets can be a great source of relaxation but they are also a responsibility!
