Special Forces in Every Military Branch?

Just curious about military options after I graduate next year. I was wondering, do all branches of the military have their own special forces unit? I am particularly interested in any role allowing for specialized and technical training, and just wanted to know my potential pathways in the Army, Navy, Air Force, etc.

Yes, every branch of the U.S. military has its own special operations or special forces unit, each with their unique roles and training processes.

The Army has several options for you, the most well-known being the Special Forces (Green Berets) and the 75th Ranger Regiment. The Green Berets are divided into multiple groups based on geographic focus, and their roles typically include unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, and more. The 75th Ranger Regiment is an elite light infantry combat formation within the U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), known for conducting direct action raids and airfield seizures.

The Navy's primary special forces unit is the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, more commonly known as the SEALs. They conduct a variety of special operations missions that often involve maritime and coastal operations, ranging from reconnaissance to direct combat.

In the Air Force, you'll want to look into the Special Tactics units or Pararescue teams. The Special Tactics units are ground forces that work primarily with aircraft to control air traffic from remote and temporary airfields. Pararescue teams, often known as "PJs", are responsible for recovery and medical treatment of personnel in humanitarian and combat environments.

The Marine Corps has the Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) also known as "Raiders", which engage in direct action, special reconnaissance, and foreign internal defense.

The Coast Guard's special operations unit is the Deployable Specialized Forces (DSF), which conduct law enforcement, counter-terrorism, and defense operations.

Lastly, the Space Force, being a relatively new branch, does not have a defined special operations unit as of now. However, it does have opportunities for technical specialties including space operations and intelligence.

While each unit offers advanced training and distinct operational duties, all require rigorous physical and mental preparation. You should carefully research each opportunity and consider talking to a military recruiter to fully understand the demands and benefits of these roles.
