Easiest sport to walk-on in college?

I am quite fit and have been playing sports all my life. I can handle most sports at a decent level. I was wondering about the 'walk-on' process for college sports teams. Which sport do you think is easiest to walk on to at the college level?

The answer to your question greatly depends on the specific college you're attending, as the competitiveness of various sports programs can vary significantly from school to school. However, some general trends can offer some insights.

Generally speaking, sports with larger rosters or less popularity at the school could present more opportunities as a walk-on. Think about sports like rowing or track and field. Rowing, in particular, is often cited as one that frequently has walk-on opportunities, primarily because it's a sport that many people do not have exposure to before college. Plus, the teams tend to be larger, which means more slots to be filled.

Track and field can also be a good option due to the range of events available. You could potentially find a specific event that fits your strengths and where the competition might be less intense.

In terms of process, the walk-on experience often includes reaching out to the coach or attending an open tryout, followed by a period of practice and assessment before a final decision is made.

Keep in mind, though, that being a walk-on athlete is still highly competitive and requires a similar level of commitment as recruited athletes. It's important to seriously consider the time commitment and to determine whether it complements your academic and personal goals. Good luck!
