Exploring Foreign Language options at Harvard University: Which are easier?

Hi there folks! I'm a junior currently starting to plan out my application for Ivy Leagues, particularly Harvard. Amid one of my considerations is which foreign language to potentially pursue. I was wondering, from your experience, which foreign language is generally considered easier to learn at Harvard? Of course, I'm ready to dedicate my time and effort, but I still want to hear your opinions. Thanks!

Hello! Your curiosity about the foreign languages offered at Harvard is an intriguing point of exploration. The answer, however, heavily depends on your native language and your previous language-learning experiences. Languages from the same family of your native language or a language you're already fluent in - such as Romance languages for English speakers - tend to be easier to pick up, as they share common vocabulary and similar grammatical structures.

Given this, Harvard offers several Romance languages like Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese, which could be easier for a native English speaker, compared to say, Mandarin, Arabic, or Russian, which have wholly different alphabets and grammar structures.

However, many Harvard foreign language programs have their unique attributes that could provide a relative advantage. For example, a notable feature of Harvard’s language departments is that they put a strong emphasis on immersion and conversation from early levels, which makes it easier for students to pick up the languages in a more authentic, practical way.

Another factor to consider is the available resources, both within and outside the classroom. Some languages may have additional resources like language clubs, conversation partners, or community language tables, which can significantly aid in your language acquisition journey.

It is important, however, to pick a language that aligns with your interests, career ambitions, or cultural affinities, as motivation and engagement significantly impact language-learning experience and success. It's not just about ease but enjoyment and utility too.

I hope this perspective provides some clarity and helps you in your decision-making process. Good luck with your plans!
