What are some of the most difficult college degrees to pursue?

Hey y'all! I've been thinking a lot about the kind of challenge I want in college and I've come across a lot of talk about 'hard' degrees. What are some majors you guys think are particularly challenging and why? Would love to hear experiences from those in these fields!

Hello! The level of difficulty for any degree major can be subjective according to individual strengths, interests, and commitment. However, there are certain majors that are traditionally considered challenging because of their rigorous coursework and high demands.

1. Engineering: Engineering degrees, encompassing civil, mechanical, aerospace, electrical, and chemical, among others, require strong proficiency in mathematics and physics. They tend to have relatively high dropout rates and can require extra study hours compared to other majors.

2. Physics: Physics majors often share a heavy load of math coursework with engineering, and additionally, they grapple with complex concepts in areas such as quantum mechanics or statistical physics.

3. Computer Science: While not as math-heavy as engineering or physics, computer science does involve complex problem-solving, advanced programming, and algorithms.

4. Pre-Med/Biology: The coursework for pre-med students is famously rigorous, with organic chemistry and advanced biology courses being particularly draining for a lot of students. Plus, there is the pressure of studying for the MCAT and maintaining a high GPA for med school applications.

5. Architecture: This degree is often considered difficult due to the large amount of studio work, which can be time-consuming and require a great deal of detail and precision.

6. Economics: This major can be challenging due to the use of high-level math and statistics. Theoretical economic models can be complex, requiring a well-developed understanding of economic principles.

7. Mathematics: For students unaccustomed to abstract thought, mathematics can be incredibly challenging with courses in calculus, combinatorics, and advanced number theory or logic.

Keep in mind, however, that what is difficult for one student, may come naturally to another. It's important to consider your personal interests and aptitudes when selecting a major.
