What are the enlistment standards for each military branch?

I've started thinking about the military as an option after high school, but I'm not sure what each branch looks for in terms of fitness, academic qualifications, etc. Does anyone have a good breakdown of what kind of standards to prepare for?

In general, each branch of the U.S. military has basic requirements related to age, citizenship status, educational level, physical health, and criminal background. Across all branches, you must be a U.S. citizen or have legal permanent resident status, have a high school diploma or equivalent (though the services do accept a small number of individuals with a GED), pass a physical exam, and be in generally good health.

1. Army: For the Army, you need to be between 18 and 34 years old (with parental consent, you may enlist at 17). You must pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) with a minimum score of 31. Physical requirements vary depending on the specific job but expect a focus on strength and endurance in the physical fitness tests.

2. Navy: The Navy also requires individuals to be between 17 and 39 years of age. You need to score at least a 35 on the ASVAB. The Navy emphasizes swimming skills and you should be able to swim one-third of a mile non-stop, among other physical standards.

3. Air Force: The age range for the Air Force is 17 to 39. The ASVAB minimum score is higher than the Army and Navy at 36. The Air Force Physical Ability and Stamina Test (PAST) benchmarks for the basic minimum ability would be unusual if not met.

4. Marines: Marines have the youngest maximum age for enlistment, at 29 years. Your ASVAB score must be at least 32. The Marines have a rigorous physical fitness requirement, including running, crunches, and pull-ups, with expectations varying by age and gender.

5. Coast Guard: Age requirements for the Coast Guard are 17 to 31 years. ASVAB score needs to be 40 or higher. Physical fitness tests include push-ups, sit-ups, a 1.5-mile run, and a swim test.

6. Space Force: The newest branch, the Space Force, at this moment accepts transfers from other service branches, mostly from the Air Force. The physical requirements would probably be similar to the Air Force but specific details would need to be confirmed.

Remember, each branch of the military has different career fields, and each field may have additional physical or educational requirements. I'd suggest you to consult with a recruitment officer of the branch you are interested in for the most accurate information. They will be able to give you a thorough breakdown for the specific area you're interested in.
