Hi everyone, I've been considering going into the military after high school and have a particular interest in Special Operations. I've heard about some sort of sixth branch specifically for them? Can anyone provide more insights on that and perhaps some guide on how to prepare myself for such a career? Best exercises? Subjects to focus on maybe? Thanks!
Hello,
There seems to be a bit of misunderstanding about the sixth branch of the armed forces. The U.S. military is comprised of six branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Space Force, which is the sixth and newest branch, is focused on space operations rather than special operations. It was established to protect U.S. and allied interests in space through activities like monitoring space debris and ballistic missile launches, and maintaining the satellites that allow other branches to communicate.
Special Operations Forces (SOF) are a highly-trained and elite group within each military branch, not a separate branch itself. For example, the Army has the Green Berets and Rangers, the Navy has the SEALs, the Marine Corps has the Marine Raider Regiment, and the Air Force has Special Tactics Squadrons.
As for preparing for a career in Special Operations, it involves comprehensive development in both physical and mental aspects.
At the physical level, Special Operations roles require exceptional physical fitness, so a consistent and rigorous training routine is a cornerstone. This routine should focus on cardiovascular training (running, swimming, rucking), and building strength and agility. You may want to consult a trainer to set up an appropriate workout program that can help prepare you for the intense physical performance requirements.
On the academic side, while there is no specific subject to focus on, being a well-rounded student can be beneficial. Special Operators need to be problem solvers, flexible thinkers, and to have solid communication skills. Strong proficiency in a foreign language can be a definite advantage, depending on the unit or the assignments you may be given.
Remember that meeting the entry requirements for Special Operations is just a fraction of what it takes to succeed in these units. The selection process for SOF roles is especially stringent and those who are successful are often individuals with tenacity, resilience, a strong moral compass, and the ability to work effectively in team dynamics.
It's highly recommended to also discuss your career aspirations with a military recruiter who can give you specific tips and resources to help guide your preparatory process.
Lastly, don't underestimate the importance of mental toughness which can be built through setting and achieving goals, pushing your comfort boundaries and resilience training. Remember, professional guidance from a military career counselor or a former special operator can go a long way in preparing you for a career in military special operations.
Best of luck as you navigate this path!
