Military and asthma - is enlistment still possible?

A bit stressed about this - do any branches of the military allow people with asthma to enlist? I've got a mild kind of asthma but it doesn’t inhibit my physical activities that much. I really want to enlist after high school, but I don’t know if this could be a deal-breaker. Thanks for any insights!

While the policies of individual military branches can differ, it's generally true that asthma may complicate the enlistment process, but doesn't always disqualify someone. The U.S. military has rules in place for entering service with certain medical conditions, including asthma. In fact, asthma is widely recognized as one of the conditions that can disqualify you from military service.

However, don't lose hope - the specifics matter. For instance, if your asthma symptoms or attacks only occurred while you were younger and you haven’t had any since you turned 13, you may be eligible for military service. Conversely, if you've had symptoms or an asthma attack after your 13th birthday, it could be more challenging. When the military evaluates you, they'll take into account factors such as the frequency of your asthma attacks, the severity of your condition, and how much your asthma affects your daily activities.

During the enlistment process, you’ll likely have to provide medical documentation or undergo breathing tests to prove that your asthma is under control or no longer an issue. In some cases, a medical waiver may be an option, but it’s often evaluated on a case-by-case basis. It is important to be honest about your medical history during the enlistment process as dishonesty can lead to disqualification or later discharge.

At the end of the day, the best advice would be to contact a recruiter from the branch you’re interested in joining, who would be up to date on current policies and practices. Remember, the military's focus is on whether a service member can fully and effectively function in their role, even under stressful conditions. Good luck!
