What are the requirements for joining the Navy Seals?

Hey there! I'm a high school junior seriously considering a military career after I graduate. I've been particularly intrigued by the Navy Seals. What are the physical, academic, and other requirements for joining this elite group?

Joining the Navy SEALs is indeed a remarkable aspiration, but it's important to understand that it requires exceptional physical stamina, mental fortitude, and commitment.

Physical Requirements: You must meet physical requirements during the initial stages of selection and throughout training. This includes passing the Physical Screening Test (PST), which assesses your swimming, push-ups, curl-ups, pull-ups, and running capabilities.

Academic Requirements: The minimum academic qualifications require you to have a high school diploma or a GED. Good performance in academics particularly in math, and any technical/science subjects can be advantageous, as you're required to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The ASVAB is essentially a series of tests that helps measure your aptitude in different fields such as Mechanical Comprehension or General Science.

Citizenship: You must be a U.S. citizen to apply for the Navy SEAL program.

Age: Applicants need to be between the ages of 17 to 28. However, waivers can be granted for highly qualified applicants aged 29 and 30.

Vision: SEAL candidates must have good vision, but corrective surgery such as LASIK is also accepted. The requirement is 20/40 best eye and 20/70 worst eye; correctable to 20/25 with no color blindness

Legality: SEAL candidates need to pass an extensive background check. A clear legal record is highly advisable, though waivers can be obtained for certain cases.

Mental Strength: While not a formally stated requirement, the mental demands of training and service in the SEALs are enormous. Demonstrating resilience, determination, and the ability to overcome adversity will be crucial.

Finally, it's important to understand that meeting these requirements only makes you eligible to start testing and training with the SEALs. The selection process itself is extraordinarily rigorous, including Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, and culminating in the legendary "Hell Week". It's a demanding path, but for those who make it through, the rewards and sense of purpose can be tremendous. Best of luck if you pursue this challenging yet fulfilling path!
