What are considered the toughest classes at the University of Iowa?

Hi all, I'm planning my course load for next year at UoI and I was wondering what classes are notoriously tough? Would like to spread out the hard ones if possible. Appreciate any input!

From what I've heard, this can vary depending on your learning style and major, but certain classes have gained a reputation for being challenging at the University of Iowa. However, keep in mind that taking these classes can provide valuable skills and knowledge, and often, a grade isn't the best reflection of understanding a subject.

One class that many science and pre-med students have found difficult is Biochemistry (BIOC:3130). It's a rigorous course with a significant amount of content to process and it also requires an understanding of both biology and chemistry. If you're planning to take this one, perhaps consider balancing it with some less intensive classes that semester.

Another class that frequently gets listed as tough is Organic Chemistry II (CHEM:2230). This course is well-known for its detailed molecular structure studies and complex reactions. Knowing the content from Organic Chemistry I thoroughly is crucial to do well.

Principles of Macroeconomics (ECON:1200) and Principles of Microeconomics (ECON:1100) have also been noted as challenging, particularly if economics isn't your strong suit. These classes involve a lot of theory and graphs, and the concepts can be abstract and hard to grasp.

In the humanities, Interpretation of Literature (ENGL:1200) often surprises students with the depth of analysis required. It not only involves reading numerous texts but also deep critical thinking and writing.

Finally, a lot of computer science students highlight Algorithms (CS:3330) as being particularly challenging given the amount of theoretical understanding and problem-solving skill it demands.

In any of these classes, don't hesitate to utilize office hours, study groups, and any resources provided by the University to help you succeed. Good luck with your course planning! Please consider speaking with an academic advisor as well, they can provide personalized insight on which courses you can take based on your academic goals and strengths.
