Looking for Colleges in Goshen, Indiana

Hey everyone! So I'm considering applying to colleges in my home state of Indiana and I'm particularly interested in those located in Goshen. Does anyone have any feedback about those colleges or universities? Any experiences or info would be really appreciated!

Goshen, Indiana is home to a few higher education institutes, but among them, Goshen College is probably the most well-known one. Goshen College is a private liberal arts college associated with the Mennonite Church USA. It's recognized for its strong commitment to community service, environmental sustainability, and international education.

One unique aspect of Goshen College's academic offerings is its strong focus on experiential learning. They have a unique program called the Goshen Core, which integrates immersive and project-based experiences into students' four years of study. Furthermore, the college's emphasis on intercultural learning leads most students to participate in at least one semester of study abroad, typically through their unique Study-Service Term.

While it's a relatively small college (student population usually around 950), this allows for good student-faculty interaction and small class sizes. The student-faculty ratio is about 10:1, which means individual students generally receive a lot of attention from professors.

The campus is located in a semi-urban area, providing students with both a tranquil learning environment and access to the cultural offerings within the city. Goshen was named Indiana's Community of the Year in 2017, so it’s a vibrant place to live and learn! Also, the town's close proximity to South Bend provides additional opportunities for cultural exploration and internships.

You might also get a chance to indulge in athletics at Goshen College. They've got sports teams (known as the Maple Leafs) competing in the NAIA. If you're a sports enthusiast, this might make your college life even more enjoyable. Plus the college's Music Center is a cultural gem of the area, offering a variety of concerts and performances throughout the year.

Keep in mind, though, that Goshen College's Mennonite affiliation informs its educational philosophy and community values. This impacts aspects of college life, from service learning requirements to the way the college handles controversy. This doesn't mean you need to be Mennonite to go to Goshen - many students aren't - but it's still something to consider as you're deciding if it's the right fit for you.

In summary, Goshen College offers a personalized education with plenty of hands-on and global learning opportunities, all within a close-knit community. If you want a small college experience with a strong community service and global learning focus, and you're comfortable with the school's Mennonite affiliation, it could be an excellent fit!
