I've been reading about different military ranks and am a bit confused. Can anyone clear up which branch of the military the rank of Colonel is associated with? Is it the same across all branches or does it vary?
The rank of Colonel is found in the United States Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. In these branches, it's a senior field grade military officer rank just above the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and just below the rank of Brigadier General.
In the Navy and Coast Guard, however, the equivalent rank is Captain. Also, in the Space Force, the equivalent rank is Colonel as well.
Just as a sidenote, the term 'Colonel' is rooted in history from the early military systems that utilized it, like the Roman Army. But, its present usage and responsibilities certainly vary based on the specific military branch and country.
