What are the challenging first-year classes in college?

As we start to look at colleges, I'm also trying to anticipate what the course load might be like. Has anyone experienced particularly challenging courses in their freshman year that they'd warn a junior about? Any subjects that are notorious for being a surprise when you get to college?

The freshmen year is a significant jump from high school, not only because you're likely to experience a different style of teaching but also due to the demanding academic expectation in most colleges. So, kudos on wanting to be proactive.

One infamous challenge for many freshmen is Introductory Chemistry, often dubbed as a "weed out" class for pre-med students. The course load is known to be considerably heavy with regular lab work, exam preparation and homework. It's critical to build a solid foundation in this course, so don't underestimate it.

Another challenging course can be Calculus, especially if your high school math preparation was not up to par. The rate at which the material is covered can be staggering for some students. Also, many colleges have "honors" versions of standard classes that might be much more challenging due to the extent and depth of material covered.

Some students find the initial college level English/Writing courses surprisingly challenging. These courses often require more critical thinking and involve different styles of writing than high school English classes.

Finally, while specific courses can be challenging, I've heard that transitioning to a university's academic expectations is a common hurdle for first-year students. The workload might be more substantial, and grading might be more rigorous than in high school. Therefore, learning to manage your time effectively, utilizing tutoring resources, attending office hours, and developing good study habits can be critical to successfully navigate the first year. Keep in mind, these challenges can vary based on the selectivity of the college and a student's individual strengths and weaknesses.
