Hey y'all, I'm hoping to apply to Vanderbilt and I'm in the process of figuring out what I want to major in. Can someone give me a rundown of the majors and minors they offer? I'd love some input from someone who's been there. I'm considering something in the sciences but I'm also fascinated by humanities. Any advice or insights would be much appreciated!
Vanderbilt University, known for its strong academics, offers a wide variety of majors and minors across its undergraduate schools. Including those in the College of Arts and Science, the School of Engineering, the Peabody College of Education and Human Development, and the Blair School of Music.
In terms of the sciences, Vanderbilt offers extensive choices. Majors such as biology, chemical and biomolecular engineering, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, neuroscience, and physics, amongst others, could align with your interests. Minors in the sciences include astronomy, scientific computing, and environmental science, to name just a few.
In the humanities, Vanderbilt offers majors in classics, English, history, philosophy, religious studies, and several foreign languages. Minors in the humanities encompass a broader range and include creative writing, cinema and media arts, and gender and sexuality studies.
Vanderbilt also has notable interdisciplinary majors like Medicine, Health, and Society or Child Development, Cognitive Studies, and Child Studies that merge humanities and sciences, which could be a great fit given your dual interests.
It's also important to note that Vanderbilt has a liberal arts approach to education, which means that even if you select a major in the sciences, you will still be required to complete core courses in the humanities and vice versa. This model provides a well-rounded education and allows for exploration outside of your chosen major.
Choosing a major can be a daunting task, but it's also an opportunity to find what truly drives you. Many students start off unsure about their exact path but end up discovering subjects they're passionate about during their first year. Vanderbilt also has a process in place that allows students to easily change their major if they find their interests shifting. So, don't feel like you need to lock in the second you arrive on campus - you'll have time to explore and connect with professors and upperclassmen to determine what's the best fit for you.
Finally, on a separate note, if you do end up applying to Vanderbilt and want tips on how to maximize your chances of acceptance, I'd check out this blog post from CollegeVine, which breaks down how to tackle their school-specific supplemental essay(s): https://blog.collegevine.com/how-to-write-the-vanderbilt-university-essays/. Especially at highly selective schools like Vanderbilt, the essays are often just the thing that distinguish one talented applicant from another.
Good luck with your application process!
