Which Military Branch Operated the Mustang Plane?

Hello everyone, I've always been fascinated by military planes, specifically the Mustang. Does anyone know which branch of the military flew Mustang planes? I'm seriously considering joining the military after graduation and I’d like to learn more about its aviation history.

The Mustang, more officially known as the P-51 Mustang, was widely operated by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), which was the air service component of the United States Army during and immediately after World War II. The Army Air Forces were later restructured into what is known today as the United States Air Force in 1947.

The P-51 Mustang's introduction importantly assisted the Allies' air war in Europe. It was celebrated for its speed and maneuverability, which proved to be a game-changer in terms of escorting bomber aircraft deep into enemy territory and efficiently engaging enemy fighter planes.

The Mustang's place in aviation history is significant. It was remarkably used by the USAAF's Eighth Air Force, which used Mustangs as long-range escort fighters for its heavy bomber fleets. The aircraft's long range and excellent aerial combat performance greatly contributed to the successful strategic bombing campaign against German industrial and military targets.

It's wonderful that you're considering a military career and want to build an understanding of its history. This study not only gives valuable context but can also inspire as you shape your own military path.
