Help with Applying on CommonApp

I know CommonApp is a really popular platform for college applications. I'm about to start my application journey and could use any advice or tips on how to navigate it. What should I be aware of when using CommonApp? Thanks!

First, it's important to remember that you should double-check the application requirements of each college you’re interested in, via the Common App or directly on the school's website to make sure you are meeting all their unique needs.

When it comes to filling out your application, be meticulous. Start by collecting all of your important information like your Social Security Number (if you have one), academic transcript, standardized test scores, and extracurricular activities. Having everything at hand will make the process much smoother.

More specifically, for the "Activities" section, remember it's not just about quantity, but quality too. Think about what you have done that has impacted others or shaped you as a person. This can be school/clubs involvement, sports, volunteer experiences, part-time jobs.

For the "Academics" section, fill in your grades, honors, AP courses, etc. accurately. Not all universities require a counselor to verify your transcript, but it is essential to be honest and accurate about your academic background.

Regarding the essays, there is one general Common App essay, where you can choose from a set of prompts. This should tell your unique story and show the admission officers something about you that they can't find in your transcripts or test scores. Besides this, many schools will have their own supplemental essays. Each essay is an opportunity to demonstrate more about your personality, so don't replicate content across them.

Keep a close eye on each school’s deadline as every school will have different ones. The Common App will help remind you of these but ultimately, you're responsible for submitting on time.

Lastly, get someone to proofread your application, such as a teacher or a mentor. Avoid submitting immediately after completing your application and give yourself time to revise.

While the process may seem daunting, with proper organization and time management, it can be effectively navigated. Best of luck with your college application journey!
