What's Rice University like?

I'm a rising junior exploring my college options. Rice University has come up a few times in my search and I'd love to know more from people who are there or have been. Could anyone speak to the academic rigor, student life, support services, and general atmosphere? Thanks in advance!

Sure, I'd be happy to provide some insight into what Rice University is like. Located in Houston, Texas, Rice is a small to mid-sized private university known for its programs in STEM fields, particularly engineering, as well as the humanities and social sciences.

Academically, Rice is rigorous but not intensely competitive. Professors are known for their accessibility and focus on teaching. The small student-to-faculty ratio of approximately 6:1 allows for a more intimate learning environment, with the majority of classes having fewer than 20 students. It's common for students to build solid relationships with faculty, which can lead to excellent mentorship opportunities.

Student life at Rice is vibrant, with a unique residential college system. Much like the houses in Harry Potter, every student is assigned to one of 11 residential colleges before they arrive on campus and remain a part of this community for their entire stay at Rice. Each college has its own traditions, public parties, and internal events. This system fosters a close-knit community and gives a "small-college feel" amidst a research-focused institution.

As for student support services, Rice University has a number of resources available for its students. These include the Academic Advising Center, Student Wellbeing Office, Counseling Center, and Career Development Office, among others. There's definitely an awareness on campus about taking care of one's mental health, alongside academic pursuits.

As for the general atmosphere, students describe Rice as fostering an environment of collaboration over competition. There's a strong sense of "unconventional wisdom" where creativity and innovativeness are highly valued. Thanks to Rice’s Honor Code, take-home exams are the norm in many departments. The student body is diverse, hailing from all states and many countries, contributing to a vibrant, inclusive community.

Overall, if you're interested in a tight-knit community with a strong focus on academic excellence and student well-being, Rice University could be an excellent fit.
