Universities in Washington D.C.?

I'm considering applying to a university in Washington D.C., but I'm not sure which one yet. Can anyone tell me more about the universities there? Namely, the environment, student life, diversity, and the opportunities available in and around the D.C. area?

Sure, I'd be happy to provide some information on universities in Washington D.C.!

1. Georgetown University: Georgetown, being the oldest Catholic university in the U.S., is known for its rich history and tradition. Its campus mimics a European architectural style, creating an elegant and historic atmosphere. The student body is politically active and internationally oriented, with a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds present. Business, international affairs, and law are particularly strong offerings here. Proximity to governmental institutions provides students with ample opportunities for internships and networking.

2. George Washington University (GWU): GWU has a deep-rooted connection to national politics, given its location in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood, just a few blocks from the White House. This location opens up a wealth of opportunities for internships within government departments, NGOs, and international organizations. With students from over 130 countries, the university boasts a diverse body. GWU is especially recognized for its programs in international affairs, journalism, political science, and its medical school.

3. American University (AU): Located in a residential area of D.C., AU is notable for its programs in international relations, political science, journalism, and business. It also has a reputation for being particularly social justice-oriented, as well as being environmentally conscious. AU boasts wide-ranging opportunities, with a robust offering of internships, research, and study abroad programs. It's also home to a good deal of political activity and student activism due to its location.

4. Howard University: Howard is a historically black university that is recognized for its comprehensive and inclusive environment. It's a leading institution in the STEM fields, social work, and communications. Located in the vibrant and culturally rich area of Shaw, Howard allows students to experience a unique blend of academic rigor, social opportunities, and a strong senseyof community.

Each of these universities offer unique learning environments, dynamic student bodies, and countless opportunities owed in part to their location in our nation's capital. No matter what your interests, you’re bound to find something that suits you in one of these top D.C. institutions. Keep in mind, though, that the best way to get a 'feel' for the atmosphere of any college is to visit the campus, either in-person or through virtual tours if available.
