Understanding the Space Force

Indeed, the Space Force is the sixth and newest branch of the United States military. It became official in 2019, and it was established as a separate branch by the National Defense Authorization Act.

Generally speaking, the purpose of the Space Force is to organize, train, and equip personnel with a focus essentially on space operations. Their mission ranges from tracking ballistic missile launches to maintaining the satellites that enable communication among other branches of the military.

Furthermore, a significant part of their role is to monitor space debris—this is certainly an aspect that tends to be overlooked, but it is crucial for maintaining safe and efficient operations of both military and commercial satellites.

The core idea is that the Space Force aims to protect U.S. and allied interests in space. They operate with the understanding that the space domain is an essential component of our nation's defense infrastructure. Hence, it's the Space Force's job to ensure its security, just as the Navy ensures the security of waterways or the Army secures land-based operations.

Please note that while the Space Force is indeed focused on space, it's very different from organizations like NASA that deal with exploration and scientific advancements. The Space Force is primarily a military body, centered on defense activities.
