Looking at Large Universities in California

Californian universities are high on my list, but I'm slightly overwhelmed with the options. I'm keen on bigger environments. Could anyone tell me about their experiences with large universities in California, especially in terms of adjustment, course variety, opportunities and overall experiences?

Sure, I'd be glad to share some insights on large universities in California. It's worth noting that California has a broad range of large public universities, from the University of California system (like UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego), to the California State University system (like San Diego State and San Francisco State).

They all offer unique environments, broad course varieties, and plenty of opportunities.

Regarding adjustment, larger universities tend to have more robust support systems such as well-staffed student services, mental health resources, academic advisors, and more diversity in terms of student population. This would provide ample opportunities to find your niche, join clubs, and make friends.

As for course variety, these universities usually have a large offering of majors and minors. For instance, UC Berkeley offers over 130 undergraduate majors across various disciplines. This extensive variety allows you to explore different areas of interest or even consider interdisciplinary studies.

Large universities also generally offer countless academic and non-academic opportunities. You might join research projects as early as your freshman year and have opportunities to study abroad. There are also abundant internship opportunities due to universities' partnerships with industries and local businesses.

As for the overall experience, many students appreciate the vibrant campus life filled with events, club activities, and sports games. Also, California's weather and proximity to beaches, mountains, and cultural sites add an extra layer of attraction to the university experience.

However, transitioning to a large university might initially feel overwhelming due to the sheer size and fast pace. Underclassman classes may be large, potentially in the hundreds of students, which might feel impersonal to some. But, you'll usually find smaller, more intimate classes as you dive into your major-specific courses.

Lastly, remember that while "large" often equates to abundant resources, it also means there can be more competition for these resources, like internships, research positions, and even some classes. Being proactive and utilizing advising resources is key to landing these opportunities.

Remember that each university has its own personality and vibe. Try to participate in virtual tours, student panels, and information sessions to gauge where you might feel the most comfortable.
