Training Dogs in the Military

Hello everyone! I am a junior, and after high school, I am considering the military as an option. However, I am very interested to know: which branch of the military trains dogs? I've always loved animals, especially dogs, and I would love to combine that passion with a military career if possible. Does anyone have any information?

Absolutely, the branch of the military that specializes in training dogs is the United States Air Force. Their Military Working Dogs (MWDs) program is quite reputable. The 341st Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas is where MWDs are trained.

In this program, dogs are trained for various important duties such as detection work (for explosives and drugs), patrol, and specialized mission functions for the Department of Defense (DoD) and other government agencies. Handlers receive a robust training alongside their canine counterparts to ensure they efficiently work as a team.

It would be advantageous if you had a background in animal behavior or veterinary sciences, although it's not strictly necessary. The key here is your demonstrated interest and dedication to working with animals, especially dogs.

But remember, even though the Air Force oversees the training, Military Working Dogs are utilized across all branches of the military. So you could theoretically end up working with these dogs in any branch, not just the Air Force.

It's a unique and rewarding path within the military that combines a love of animals with service to your country. Should you choose to pursue this, it could open up opportunities for roles in law enforcement or private security after your military service, as the skills and experiences you gain are highly transferable.
