How diverse should my high school history class selection be for college?

Hey guys, I’m trying to figure out if I should be focusing on taking a variety of history classes in my last two years of high school to impress colleges. Do admissions prefer to see that I've studied world history, U.S. history, and another type like European or art history, or is it okay if I just really dive deep into one area I’m passionate about?

Hi there! It's fabulous that you're thinking ahead about your course selection. Colleges typically appreciate when students demonstrate an interest and depth in a subject area, especially if it aligns with your intended major or academic interests. So, diving deep into one area you're passionate about can be advantageous, especially if you're able to connect it to your long-term goals or if you pursue related extracurricular activities, such as participating in History Olympiad or starting a history club.

However, exposing yourself to a breadth of courses, like world history or art history, could also provide a well-rounded perspective and hone critical thinking skills that colleges value. If you also aren't sure yet what you want to study yet, this variety can be personally useful, in helping you channel your thinking in a more focused direction. Plus, since history is often taught in an interdisciplinary way, taking a variety of courses might enrich your understanding and preparation for college-level studies in all subjects.

In summary, either approach can be beneficial, but if there's a particular area that excites you, don't hesitate to focus on it and seek depth. Also remember to do well in whichever classes you choose, as the grades you earn are an important aspect of your college application. Good luck!
